The Forgotten City is a quest mod for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim released in October 2015.
One day, you are going about your business as usual when a courier approaches you with a letter. The letter woman is from a woman named Cassia, who has heard great things about your problem-solving skills. She asks you to help her investigate a Dwemer ruin. She tells you that the port to the ruin bears an inscription promising riches beyond imagining. But as you show up at the ruin, it turns out that Cassia didn't tell you the full truth. She was not doing research into the ruin on her own. In fact, she was working on the task alongside her brother, Altrius. Altrius climbed into the deeper parts of the ruins and has now been missing for days on end. And indeed, Altrius' own notes on the place reveals something quite foreboding; for while the inscription does indeed tell about riches beyond imagining, it also contains the warning that anyone who enters the ruins may never return to the surface. Regardless, Cassia begs you to follow in her brother's footsteps and bring him back to her.

Upon entering the ruins, you find Altrius's dead body — aged almost beyond recognition — hanging from a tree in the center of a darkened courtyard, surrounded by burned corpses. On his person is a suicide note, saying that he has spent a lifetime in this place and realized that death is preferable to continued existence here. He urges you to follow his lead — and warns that whatever you do, you should never open the mysterious cabin on the lake..
The mod was well received by Skyrim's modding community, and even managed to garner some attention and praise from the mainstream gaming press. As a result of the positive reception, the mod's lead developer, Nick Pearce, has since decided to take the project further by separating it entirely from Skyrim and The Elder Scrolls setting, expanding it into a full stand-alone game made in the Unreal 4 engine and set in its own universe. The game is currently planned for a late 2019 release. The official site can be found here.

It’s no secret that mods are one of the things that makes Skyrim so endearing. Despite the game’s age, the modding community helps keep Skyrim relevant and fun to play.

Planned for an October 2015 launch, the Skyrim Forgotten City mod will make its debut on Steam and ModDB. The mod itself is more of a game expansion, taking players on an epic journey through a lost, thousand year old Dwarven city.
If that doesn’t sound awesome enough, players will be tasked with traveling through time to solve a mysterious murder. According to the mod’s developers:
The Forgotten City is a lore-friendly expansion to Skyrim with a dark, non-linear story in which you’ll discover and explore an ancient underground city. At its core is an epic murder mystery, requiring you to explore, interrogate suspects, fight new enemies, and even travel back and forwards in time. It has over 1200 lines of dialogue and 30 interactive characters, and several very different endings depending on the decisions you make.
Features
The Skyrim Forgotten City mod will feature:
The mod will only require the base game to play (the Skyrim DLC expansions aren’t required). In addition, the mod is designed for any level of player.

Mods are a popular reason to play games on PC. They can add anything to a game, from new models to entire new quests and locations. It does my heart good to see an old mod given new life as its own game.
The Forgotten City is a remake of the popular Skyrim mod of the same name. The original mod has been downloaded well over one million times and even won a national Writers’ Guild award. While the upcoming game will “retain all the elements which made the original beloved,” it won’t exactly be a faithful recreation. After all, The Forgotten City mod takes place in Skyrim, a fictional location owned and copyrighted by Bethesda. Developing a standalone version of The Forgotten City that features prominent Elder Scrolls stylings would be just asking for trouble.
The story of The Forgotten City will revolve around the titular city, which is an ancient, underground Roman city. The city is populated by bronze statues, except they aren’t really statues but the city’s inhabitants, cursed because someone broke a law. Who broke the law and what law did he or she break? That is where the mystery lies.
The hook of The Forgotten City is that players need to travel to the past and prevent the law from being broken. If they fail, they will witness the horrific deaths of the city’s inhabitants, be thrown back to the beginning, and have to fix things all over again. And again. And again.
Fans of the original The Forgotten City mod will be pleased to hear that the standalone version will feature brand new plot twists, endings, and tweaked characters that will deliver a fresh new experience.
The Forgotten City is scheduled to release for the PC via Steam in 2019. So far, the development studio behind the game has no plans to port it to consoles, but that could easily change.

Quick Walkthrough[edit]
Detailed Walkthrough[edit]
Upon reaching level 5, the Courier will approach you, saying 'I have a letter here for you.'
Forgotten City Skyrim Guide Build
This will begin the quest, and Cassia's Plea will open and read itself to you. The note invites you to investigate the promise of 'Riches Beyond Imagining', which Cassia promises can be found in Forgotten Ruins in The Reach. She will request that you travel to the ruins and help her find her brother, Altrius, who explored them but did not return.
Forgotten Ruins Skyrim Walkthrough
The Forgotten Ruins are just west of Purewater Run and east-south-east of Hag Rock Redoubt, between two waterfalls. After entering it behind the first, its interior door will automatically open for you, revealing Cassia standing before a pedestal and a plaque written in Dwarven lettering: 'Riches Beyond Imagining'.
Approach her, but be ready for her to draw her sword as she angrily yells 'That's close enough- [sic]who are you?' Depending on receipt of her letter, following your introduction, the conversation could proceed one of two ways:
At this point, you can inspect the plaque in front of her, or read the Dusty Journal on the small pedestal. Once you have concluded your business on the surface, jump into the unknown. Walk through the passage in the ruins, and enter The Forgotten City. Once inside, you will find an abandoned township under the ground, with no life at all save for bats and skeevers. The area is strewn with burnt corpses, and the atmosphere is one of abandonment. As you approach a dead tree, a hanged Old man drops from his noose in front of you. Beside his corpse lies an empty wine bottle, quill, and a Suicide Note. The note proves that the body is Altrius's; it intimates his tale of infinitely entering and re-entering the Lakehouse. His note goes on to urge you to kill yourself rather than endure the same fate as he did. If you choose to pursue this course of action, you may drown yourself in the lake. Otherwise, enter the Citadel to obtain the key from Altrius's ghost. As you enter it, his voice will alight the passageway and tell you that 'I was in your shoes once, a lifetime ago. I remember the way the lakehouse calls to you.' As you ascend the stairs to the Citadel's balcony, the ghost continues his story: 'I thought to myself: Do I want to die alone in here, or do I want to open that door?'
After the final stairs and the final warning, you will see Altrius's Ghost around a corner. As you round the corner, it will charge from behind its own at you, yelling 'Stay away! I hid that key for a reason!' Battle and defeat the ghost. Once this is complete, exit the Citadel to its balcony, on which a small chest sits. Open it to take the key, but be prepared for a surprise: The balcony will drop from beneath you, and a voice will whisper into your ear: 'Lakehouse.' After you have recovered from the significant fall damage, head to the Lakehouse and enter it. Once inside, do not try to leave, as a voice will angrily yell 'My letter!' each time you attempt escape. Instead, go to the desk and read Metellus's Note. The letter charges you with a mission: Prevent the desolation of the Forgotten City. Once Metellus's last words have been spoken, you are free to exit. Do so, and the door will reveal a strange portal that will cast you into a different time: The Forgotten City will be bustling, illuminated by the sun under the ground. The Forgotten City, a time-looping murder mystery which won an Australian Writers Guild Award as a mod for Skyrim, is becoming its own game. Developers Modern Storyteller announced last night that they’re “re-imagining” The Forgotten City as a standalone game in Unreal Engine. I missed the mod but this sounds like a fascinating Groundhog Day/The Last Express sort of time-looping mystery, sending us explore and alter the events that led to 26 explorers in an ancient underground Roman city being magically turned to gold after one breaks a law. Peep this trailer below.
I am very into this idea. Modern Storyteller gab about chatting, sneaking, investigating, threatening, and generally interfering to solve the mystery and discover different ways events could unfold, with a number of different endings for the time loop. It looks a real shiny place to explore, and not just because everyone gets turned to gold after someone breaks the cardinal rule.
For folks who played the mod, the new version should still offer surprises, set in a new city, offering new takes on characters, adding new music and new voice acting, and whacking in combat and climbing. And looking mighty fancy, of course. And not being mired in Skyrim.
The Forgotten City is coming to Steam in 2019. See its site for more. If you’re curious, you can download the original Forgotten City from Nexus Mods for regular Skyrim and the Special Edition.
Speaking of new lives from old Scrolls, Bethesda announced The Elder Scrolls VI the other day. It won’t be out for aaages but is now officially confirmed (as if there were any doubt?).
